AP English Language and Composition course helps students build reading and writing skills that students need in order to be successful in college. This course guides students in learning how writing language functions rhetorically. This course helps students' deepen knowledge of written language.

AP English Language and Composition Exam - Overview

Duration

AP English Language and composition exam lasts 3 hours 15 minutes. 

Section I

Section I contains multiple choice 52-55 Questions and lasts about 1 hour and counts towrds 45% of your score.  

This section includes excerpts from non-fiction texts and accompanied by several multiple choice questions.


Section II

Section II contains free response questions, has 3 prompts and lasts about 2 hours and 15 minutes and counts towards 55% of your overall exam score.   

This section contains 15 minutes for reading source materials for the synthesis prompt and 2 hours to write essay responses to the three free-response prompts.

Additional Info

Students read several texts about a topic and create an argument that synthesizes at least three of the sources to support their thesis.

Rhetorical Analysis: Students read a non-fiction text and analyze how the writer’s language choices contribute to his or her purpose and intended meaning for the text.

Argument: Students create an evidence-based argument that responds to a given topic.

AP English Language and Composition - Princeton Review

PROS:  Like any other Princeton review book, this one won't disappoint you. Very good book with detailed study guide. Like any AP Exam, AP English Language & Composition Exam can be challenging.  To get stellar score on this test, we recommend Cracking the AP English Language & Composition.  This book would help you score 5 on your exam.  The Princeton Review's comprehensive study guide includes 2 full-length practice tests, thorough content reviews.  

This book has focused key reviews and rhetorical modes with 2 full-length practice tests, detailed answers with explanation and scoring worksheets. 

CONS: Like any other publication, there are few errors but overall it does a pretty good job summarizing the things you need to know for the AP English Language & Composition exam.

Just as an example, the practice test has answer choices A,B,C, D, E but on the answer document it provides bubbles and option "E" is missing.

AP English Language and Composition - Barron's AP Guide

PROS:  Like any other Princeton review book, this one won't disappoint you. Very good book with detailed study guide. Like any AP Exam, AP English Language & Composition Exam can be challenging.  To get stellar score on this test, we recommend Cracking the AP English Language & Composition.  This book would help you score 5 on your exam.  The Princeton Review's comprehensive study guide includes 2 full-length practice tests, thorough content reviews.

CONS: The practice exams have many questions directly from College Board and there are several errors, but overall does a good job of covering what you need to score 5 on your AP Exam.

PROS:  This Crash Course is perfect if you are trying to prepare for the exam at last minute or also for doing revision.  We recommend purchasing this book to do revision along with Barron's or Princeton's AP English Language & Composition book. 

This book does a good job of providing additional test logistics and helpful tips not covered in either of the books listed above.  Also, due to the nature of the course, we definitely recommend getting this book.

CONS: We feel the best way to study for AP English Language & Composition exam is to practice writing Essays and take as many practice exams as possible.  Due to the accelerated material this supplemental book doesn't cover everything, but if you use it with other books, this can really help increase your chances of getting 5 on your AP exam.
